Now pricing out tile, plumbing and fixtures. It’s going to be an expensive summer!

We’re re-carpeting the two carpeted rooms in the house because the current stuff is absolute shit. That’s fifteen hundo right there. I’m also turning the “Sunroom” (just a room with walls and two very small windows) into the master closet. Once this is done, I’ll be turning the old master closet (which was an add-on to the back of the master bath, originally taken from unused space in the laundry room) into the master bath. The current master bath, at ~3’w x ~7’d, is damn TINY. You have to sidle past the toilet to get to the shower! So by converting the old closet, I will be adding about 150% more square footage to the bath, making it navigable. It’ll probably be $3500 in itself.

thats some fancy carpet. I’m in the process of redoing our bath. New toilet, sink, repairing dumbass structural hackjob from previous owner, insulation, blueboard, plaster, beadboard paneling, redoing plumbing. I think its gone about $500 so far.

If you’ve got a friend with a tile saw, it turns out tile is much cheaper than carpet, though carpet is much quicker and cleaner to install. I just did two comparably sized rooms myself, a decent sized bathroom and a small bedroom. The tile floor cost me $70 in materials (not counting food and beer), the carpet cost me $150 plus $50 for the padding and a few bucks for the tack strips. The bathroom took about 9 hours to put in and another hour to grout a day or two later, the carpet took about an hour and it was in.

Contrast that to the $5k I spent having 4 other rooms carpeted with a much lower quality carpet. I think the killer was the stairs though, because that seemed to take them a while.

I’m about to get rid of the carpet. Can’t stand the stuff.

Yeah p fancy carpet. I don’t think the wife was expecting that when she picked out her favorite (nearly $5/sq ft). As for the bathroom:

Demolition of a few walls
Repair on walls
Demo of current shower (tile)
Re-routing current plumbing for washer
Jackhammering, adding plumbing and re-filling of foundation
New tile for floor
New tile for shower (now double-head shower, 3’x6’, nearly the entire current bathroom)
Dual sink vanity

And anything else I throw at it. Gon’ be expensive for sure ;)

The bathroom is going to be all tile. The master bedroom and my office are the only two rooms without (original ‘50s) hardwood, and my wife has expressed her interest in keeping those two carpeted.

Carpet is already taken care of - a good friend of mine has been installing for decades :)

There will be a demolition party and a tile install / plumbing party if you want to attend either / both of those
